In a world often divided by differences, music stands as a universal language that connects us all. This profound truth was beautifully illustrated in our recent conversation with Dr. Isaacson, Orchestra Director at Kutztown University, who shared insights about music's power to transcend barriers and create meaningful human connections.
One of the most striking aspects of our discussion centered on the concept of being present in the moment and how this openness can lead to unexpected opportunities. Dr. Isaacson reflected on how his mindset has evolved over the years, moving from a more narrowly focused approach to one that embraces collaboration and community impact. This shift parallels my own journey, where I've redirected energy once spent on less constructive pursuits toward making a positive difference in the world. This philosophy led to my humanitarian work in Ukraine, where a simple decision to use extra travel days for good resulted in delivering much-needed supplies to refugees who had fled with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
The conversation highlighted how seemingly small decisions—like having an interpreter present during my humanitarian visit—can completely transform outcomes. Without language assistance, I would never have been able to navigate security checkpoints, understand the refugees' needs, or make the connections that ultimately led to providing groceries for a residence housing Ukrainian mothers and children. This experience underscores the importance of breaking down communication barriers, something that resonates deeply in both humanitarian work and musical endeavors.
Dr. Isaacson spoke passionately about Kutztown University's growing music department, which has expanded to five degree programs and seen its student body increase by about 100 majors since 2016. Beyond the traditional orchestral performances and educational components, he expressed enthusiasm for initiatives that leverage music as "a tool for good." His collaboration with Hearts for Music, an organization that provides musical opportunities for individuals often overlooked by society, exemplifies this commitment. The profound impact was evident when he described how one young participant who is typically reluctant to attend rehearsals was excitedly looking forward to the performance, and how another participant who uses a wheelchair found rare moments of calm and happiness through the musical experience.
The conversation touched on the vulnerability required to be truly expressive on stage—the willingness to take risks and prioritize emotional connection over technical perfection. This artistic vulnerability parallels the openness needed to embrace new opportunities and connections in life. As Dr. Isaacson noted, "If you close yourself off in any way to anyone...they're not really going to want to listen." This wisdom extends beyond music to all human interactions, reminding us that authentic engagement requires courage and openness.
Perhaps the most powerful takeaway from our conversation was the recognition that true fulfillment comes from looking beyond ourselves. As Dr. Isaacson reflected, "With age comes wisdom...hopefully, the ability to see beyond yourself and how you can impact society." This perspective shift—from self-focus to community impact—transforms not only our own lives but creates ripples of positive change that extend far beyond what we might initially imagine.
