In a powerful two-part interview with Brenda Justice, founder and chairperson of Power of a Dream Sisters Helping Sisters Ministries, we delve into the inner workings of a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to addressing domestic violence. Operating for 16 years, this 501(c)(3) organization has developed multiple program groups under its umbrella, each targeting different aspects of domestic violence awareness, prevention, and recovery.

The cornerstone program, Cherish (Cherish the Woman God Has Made You), supports individuals currently experiencing domestic violence, those trying to escape abusive situations, and survivors rebuilding their lives. Justice emphasizes that while the organization began as a women's ministry, they welcome everyone regardless of gender – recognizing that domestic violence affects people across demographic boundaries. The organization meets monthly from March through December, providing consistent support to community members.

Beyond Cherish, Power of a Dream offers several specialized programs. The Women's Forum focuses on self-care, bringing in experts to address psychological and physical health. The Everyday Brother program serves men who have been abusers, those who have been abused, or those wanting to learn more about domestic violence prevention. This initiative, now in its second year, represents Justice's commitment to addressing domestic violence holistically, recognizing men both as potential perpetrators and victims. Topics have ranged from self-care for men to sexual domestic violence, with facilitators creating role-play scenarios to demonstrate healthy interactions.

Perhaps most impactful is the annual domestic violence workshop held every October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Rather than addressing domestic violence broadly, each year focuses on specific manifestations – from child abuse to elder abuse, with plans to address abuse against people with disabilities in the future. The workshops feature speakers from organizations like CASA, prosecutors' offices, and personal testimonials from survivors. They conclude with self-defense training tailored to the specific topic of the year.

Behind the scenes, Justice reveals the challenging reality of running a small nonprofit. Fundraising remains the most difficult aspect, with Power of a Dream competing for limited charitable dollars against larger, more established organizations. The annual Black Tie Affair at Akron Women's City Club serves as their primary fundraiser, but organizing such events requires considerable resources. Justice candidly shares that she and her executive board often reach into their own pockets to ensure programming continues, a common reality for passionate nonprofit founders.

The organization has only recently begun applying for grants, a process requiring significant documentation and accountability structures that take years to develop. Justice describes the meticulous attention required for grant applications and the financial challenges when grants require organizations to front costs before reimbursement. Even basic operational expenses – paper, ink, stamps, venue rentals – accumulate quickly for small organizations without dedicated office space.

What emerges most clearly from this conversation is how grassroots organizations adapt with incredible creativity. When unable to afford professional photographers or DJs for events, Justice leverages smartphones for photos and Spotify playlists for music. She creates her own promotional materials and program booklets, learning new skills through Google searches rather than hiring professionals. This DIY approach characterizes small nonprofits making maximum impact with minimal resources.
