Therapy has long been shrouded in stigma, often seen as a last resort for people in dire situations. In my own journey, I viewed therapy with skepticism, resistant to the idea that I needed any help beyond my own abilities. However, this changed dramatically in November 2017, a pivotal point when I found myself in a psych ward distressed and overwhelmed, realizing I could no longer navigate my challenges on my own. It was here that I was introduced to therapy, a process that initially felt daunting but turned into a life-changing experience. This episode dives into the realities of therapy, sharing the importance of acknowledging one's struggles and being open to seeking assistance.

As I recounted my experiences in therapy, I highlighted how important it is to engage with the process. Together with other individuals in therapy, we opened up about our stories and shared our vulnerabilities around a table, learning that honesty and connection can often be the first steps towards healing. The group sessions featured various activities, including art, which I initially dismissively considered outside my skill set. However, engaging in these creative outlets revealed how expressive activities could bring about healing in ways conversation alone could not.

A memorable encounter in my therapy journey occurred when I connected with Tyrus, a well-known personality in wrestling and media. I was curious about how someone in his position, facing public scrutiny regularly, manages nerves before going live on air. His honesty about still feeling anxious before a show was refreshing and made me realize that nervousness is a common thread that connects us all, regardless of our status or experience. Just like him, I frequently experience anxiety leading up to recording sessions and live events.

The truth is that nervousness doesn't just vanish; it transforms. Each time I prepare for a recording, I find myself reverting to past experiences where practice and preparation bolstered my confidence. Therapy, in this way, acts as a therapeutic practice, helping us develop resilience and the capability to face life's challenges head-on.

As we worked through various therapy modalities, my understanding of mental health deepened. Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all solution but acts as a continuous process of self-discovery and healing. Acknowledging the importance of recovery and the various tools—from therapy sessions to personal reflection—serves as a robust foundation for personal development. The experience allowed me to challenge preconceived notions about therapy, showcasing it as a proactive choice rather than a desperate measure.

Recovery is often viewed as a destination, yet I’ve come to consider it a journey filled with learning and tools that we can add to our mental health toolkit. Therapy provides an opportunity to address underlying issues, confront feelings of guilt or shame, and pave the way for healing through dialogue and creative expression. Ultimately, we come to understand that therapy is about life—its ups and downs, joys and struggles—and that sharing these experiences genuinely creates a communal understanding of human resilience.

The episode concludes with a strong reminder that engaging with your mental health is crucial regardless of background or situation. Therapy is not just about fixing what's broken; it’s about strengthening our foundations for a healthier, more fulfilled life.
