2021 World Mental Health Day Event: A Brand New Day
With the world beginning to recover from the pandemic, discussions regarding the importance of mental health have re-emerged with a new understanding and awareness. Due to everyone being forced to limit contact with family and friends, many people have faced new challenges with loneliness, depression, and anxiety. Individuals who before had few interactions with mental health or its effects have seen how easy it can be to be affected or know someone who has been affected by mental health. The conversation around mental health has gained more traction because of the solidarity that has developed from everyone feeling, to some degree, similar repercussions of the pandemic.
While the pandemic has affected the world as whole, its consequences are felt most by the local communities. A deficit of resources and a prioritization of basic needs such as housing and employment caused mental health awareness and treatment to be put in the background even when mental health cases rose significantly.
Seeing the need for support within the local community, Justin Hayes founded Voices for Voices, a nonprofit working to educate, promote, and advocate for the de-stigmatization of mental health.
To provide a voice for all individuals impacted by mental health, Voices for Voices is hosting an event at Walsh University where ten speakers from around the world will share firsthand accounts of the impact of mental health and how they have overcome obstacles to be where they are today.
In addition to the presenters, there will be live music from local musicians such as the Akron Symphony, Walsh's World Music Ensemble, and Hearts for Music, a special needs children’s orchestra.
The event is open to the public and will be held on Sunday, October 10th from 6-10PM in the Walsh University Barrette Business and Community Center.
